Getting The Details Right

The CA Technical Team has invested much time and effort into producing a comprehensive range of robust details for both Twin-Therm^® and River-Therm^® to allow both systems to bring to the project the optimum Psi-values for every junction and interface as standard.

This means that every detail is engineered to eradicate, or dramatically reduce, the amount of heat loss across flashings, gutters etc., through heat conduction – again, reducing the workload for the buildings heating system, with all of the positive environmental benefits this brings.

Taking the Initiative

But what happens to the unavoidable CO₂ generated during the production of our systems? After all, everything has an initial carbon footprint.

The real question is: what gets done about it?

As part of the CA Sustainability, we have measured the carbon footprint of our operations, with internal measures in place and in planning to reduce waste and streamline production. We are a Corus partner profiler, offering the Corus Confidex Sustain^® guarantee, a fully audited initiative through which, in conjunction with the CarbonNeutral Company, Corus offsets the embodied CO₂ in our Twin-Therm^®, River-Therm^® and SolarWall^® systems on a ‘cradle to cradle’ basis. In fact, CA Group produced the world’s first CarbonNeutral metal building envelope at Princess Yachts, Plymouth. We are a founder member of the dcarbon8 organisation, through whose ‘Planet Positive™’ initiative 110% of a buildings embodied CO₂ can be offset into selected projects worldwide, making the overall construction project’s impact ‘carbon negative’.

Again, CA Group was involved in the world’s first Planet Positive™ building, a Sainsbury distribution centre in Pineham, Northants.

End Of life

All our roofing and cladding systems can be disposed of within conventional demolition practices. There’s no need to employ expensive or CO₂ intensive procession such as fridge recycling.

Every Component can be fully recycled or re-used, processed for alternative applications or disposed of without creating excessive CO₂.

Low cost, high-efficiency renewables

SolarWall^®, the award winning perforated Transpired Solar Collector (pTSC) from CA Group, is a low cost, high-efficiency perforated solar plate collector mounted as an additional skin to the building envelope.

Independent tests confirm that the system is Merton Rule compliant in the vast majority of relevant applications, supplying up to 20% of the buildings total energy requirement.

Independently Tested

The Liner Panel common to CA Group’s Twin-Therm^® metal roof and cladding and River-Therm^® secret fix roofing solution has been fully independently tested for airtightness by BSRIA (The Building Services Research and Information Association). Test results have returned air leakage levels as low as 1.03m³ per hour per m² at a pressure differential of 50 Pascals.

The Building Regulations, revised in 2006, require a minimum of 10m³ per hour per m². This improvement in performance from CA Building Products’ systems means that, since there is less heated internal air escaping through the building fabric, the buildings heating system does not have to work so hard to maintain internal temperatures, cutting down on fossil fuel usage, heating costs and CO₂ emissions – while at the same time making a significant contribution to the all-important energy performance certificate.

Energy Performance Certificates (EPC)

The flexibility of the Twin-Therm^® and River-Therm^® building envelope solutions from CA Building Products are proven to deliver consistently low levels or air permeability, as low as 1.03m³/hr/m² @ 50Pa. When seeking a high asset rating low levels of air leakage are vital. This, together with the virtual elimination of thermal bridging, helped contribute to the A Rated Energy Performance Certificate at ProLogis 360 in Crewe.
