Jaguar/ Land Rover  are set to save 19 tonnes per year on Carbon emissions thanks to the revolutionary SolarWall® perforated Transpired Solar Collector (pTSC) it has newly installed at its Technical Training Academy at Leamington Spa.

SolarWall®, manufactured by CA Building Products, is a perforated metal cladding, which is installed as an additional skin to the southerly elevation of a building. It utilises the sun’s energy to heat external air as it is drawn through the surface of the cladding. This heated, fresh air is then used to offset the buildings heating load whilst providing any ventilation requirements it may have. The heating cost it saves enables a SolarWall® system to pay for itself in as little as 3 years when installed on a new-build.

Jaguar /Land Rovers’ 270m2 SolarWall® installation which was supplied using Corus  Colorcoat Prisma® in Ariadne was completed last month and is estimated to save the academy more than 80,000kWh per year.  Jane Ashton, Supply Chain Communications Manager, Corus Colors said

“Colorcoat Prisma® pre-finished steel was chosen for the refurbishment of the training centre for the 25 year maintenance and inspection free Confidex® Guarantee.  Colorcoat® products are ideal for the refurb of buildings such as this one. The ease of construction, minimum disruption to the building occupants and the improvements that can be achieved in thermal efficiency when combined with the reduction in CO2 provided by the installation of SolarWall® can lead to a truly sustainable building.

The project that saw the SolarWall® system installed by CA Refurbishment Projects was given the go-ahead in early 2008 and has seen the renovation of an existing building in Leamington Spa into a Technical Training Academy to train dealership staff in techniques for servicing Jaguar & Land Rover vehicles.

As part of a company global environmental policy, all Jaguar and Land Rover dealerships are being asked to consider the sustainability of their site operations and to take on board carbon reduction measures wherever possible. The installation of CA’s SolarWall® at this one site will set an example.

Andrew Brewster, Technical Services Design Engineer at CA Group, said: “As the building has been empty for a considerable amount for time and due the heavy foot traffic expected through the centre, it was imperative that the building complied with current and future regulations.

We also had to ensure that, owing to the nature of the work that is carried out in the training academy, the SolarWall® was able to provide a ventilation requirement of up to one air change per hour into the building whilst maintaining a safe and comfortable working environment of 20°C.”
