CA Group wins contract to provide roof and walls to Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility

CA Group, one of the UK’s major metal roofing and cladding system manufacturers has recently been awarded a contract to provide FK Roofing with the 30,000m2 roof and 15,000m2 of wall to the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility. FK Roofing Services are one of the UK’s leading roofing and cladding contractors, operating in many fields of building envelope design and installation.

CA Group’s River-Therm® roof was chosen as the material due to its ability to fit in with the design of the building and its sound reduction properties. The facility, owned by Veolia, is its first UK mechanical biological plant that will treat residual waste, with an aim to increase Southwark’s recycling rate from 21% to 30%.

The River-Therm® roof will prove a crucial part of the build. The building has specific acoustic requirements as it will home noisy machinery, and is located close to residential homes. CA Building Products has been involved very early in the concept design stage of the project, working closely with the architect, Thorpe Wheatley, and acoustic engineers RPS Group, Manchester.

Technical Manager Lee Davies explains: “The particular focus of these acoustic specifications was to the walls facing the local environment, in this case housing. Several different requirements were demanded along the various elevations. The Twin-Therm® wall cladding system with a horizontally laid half round profile finished in Corus Colorcoat Prisma® not only met the aesthetics required but also allowed CA to offer the project specific acoustic solutions. Utilising a number of different build-up depths and liner panel thicknesses ensured a compliant specification.”

The key to meeting the acoustic requirements with the systems was the type of insulation provided in CA Building Products built up systems. All the system use Therma-quilt, a soft mineral fibre insulation. The mineral fibre absorbs the sounds rather than reflecting it, which is the case with hard insulants such as foam. This together with the Therma-block, which further minimises sound transfer due to elimination of any thermal bridge, allows Twin-Therm® walls to gain a predicted weighted sound reduction of 39dB as standard.

The plant will be able to handle 87,000 tonnes of residual waste every year. The nature of the chemical processes that are conducted in the facility means that it is imperative the roof lining can manage the harsh environment. A number of chemicals will be used in the recycling process and Corus Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra® was chosen as the specified pre-finished steel for the River-Therm® roof and the Twin-Therm® walls in order to ensure that the structure is protected in this harsh environment.

The plant will incorporate Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT), a materials recycling facility to sort commingled recyclables, a household waste, a refuse and recycling centre for residents to drop off bulkier items of household waste and recycling, and an educational visitor centre. By introducing the MBT plant Veolia hopes to recover energy, capture of ferrous and non ferrous metals to reach Southwark council’s long term recycling goal of 50% by 2021.
